LISTEN TO THIS!
Over the years I’ve loved the conversations I’ve had with fellow musicians where we’ve shared our latest discoveries - with centuries of music to explore, the riches are almost endless!
I thought it would be fun to share these discoveries and discussions with a wider audience, so over the last few months I’ve sat down with some of my wonderful friends to ask them about the lesser-known gems they’re passionate about.
The project is titled, Listen to This! It’s a work in progress and I am very much a radio amateur, but the conversations I’ve had and the works I’ve discovered have been a joy.
Here are the first three. I hope you enjoy them as much as I have!
I loved talking to Francesca Dego after our recent performances with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra -
she played a brilliant Mozart G major! Francesca has an amazing curiosity and her recent recordings show that she has a great nose for neglected gems. Oh, and she’s recently published a book!
Alexandre Oguey is a member of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and one of the world’s finest Cor Anglais players. I’ve had the pleasure of working with Alexandre many times and always enjoyed his thoughtful and entertaining conversation as well as the wonderful way he has with that magical and misnamed instrument -
the english horn!
Nick Deutsch is an oboist and the music director of the Australian National Academy of Music. I’ve known Nick since our youth orchestra days. More recently we’ve worked together in Frankfurt and at the Australian National Academy of Music. When I had the idea to talk with musicians about neglected masterpieces, I knew Nick wouldn’t be short of ideas.
